Universal Pictures Monster Clock #2

As the title suggests, this is my second movie monster clock which is an OOP item from Earthbound Studios. These very nice 12” in diameter clocks turn up from time to time on eBay which is where I got mine. This very detailed 2004 sculpt was done by Rocco Tartamella.

This particular clock is a collection of twelve Universal Pictures classic black & white horror movie charterers of the 30's and 40's with the exception of the Creature From The Black Lagoon which appeared in theaters in 1954.

The line up, starting at 12 o'clock is Dracula (Bela Lugosi), The Creature From The Black Lagoon (Ben Chapman & Ricou Browning), The Werewolf Of London (Henry Hull), The Mummy (Boris Karloff), The Invisible Man (Clause Rains), The Hunchback Of Notre Dame (Lon Chaney Sr.), The Wolfman (Lon Chaney Jr.), The Phantom Of The Opera (Lon Chaney Sr.), Dr Frankenstein (Colin Clive), Frankenstein's Monster (Boris Karloff), The Bride Of Frankenstein (Elsa Lanchester) and Fritz (from Frankenstein), (Dwight Frye).

Aside from these beautifully sculpted mini-busts, the clock face has a very nice motif of a spooky castle, bats on the wing and drifting clouds in front of a full moon. 

Anyway, I decided to paint this clock in black and white in keeping with the look of the films as they were originally presented. I got a terrific assist from a friend of mine, Arcangelo Sorvillo, who is a true artist with an airbrush, something I am not. Anyway, he essentially laid the ground work for the piece by airbrushing various shades on gray intermingled with black & white.

When I got my grubby little hands on it, I embellished it with very dark browns, tans and silvers to bring out the various features, particularly the background subjects. All in all, I am very pleased on how it came out. Now all I have to do it to find a blank wall to hang it on. 4/1/21
